About this event

On May 19th you will have a chance to learn something about bioinformatics and have a lot of fun with your newfound knowledge. Expect great lectures from people that are specialized in these areas! Apply now!

Make sure to arrive on time to check your ticket at the entrance! The event will start at 18:00 on Friday, the 19th of May.

Our first speaker is Jovana Kovačević, who is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Mathematics, Belgrade University, Department for Computer Science and Informatics, where she received her Ph.D. in bioinformatics. She has almost 15 years of experience in teaching bioinformatics courses at the masters and Ph.D. study programs. Her scientific interest includes the application of machine learning, data mining, and text mining methods on biological data.

In her talk, she will explain what a genome is, how it can be reconstructed and why it is important. She will show how common graph algorithms can be used for genome reconstruction and discuss the challenges of the proposed solution.

Our second speaker is Vladimir Kovačević, who graduated from computer science in 2007 at the School of Electrical Engineering, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 2016. He worked for 5 years at Intel as an algorithm developer, and for 5 years, he’s been with Seven Bridges bioinformatics company and teaching a Genome informatics course at the School of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade. He is currently leading a spatial transcriptomics algorithm development team at BGI Research. His current interests include machine learning applications in genomics, precision medicine, metabolomics, neoantigen discovery, and general bioinformatics.

At the beginning of the lecture, he will give a short introduction to bioinformatics, the basics of molecular biology and genome sequencing technology. The rest of it will focus on the application of AI to bioinformatics problems.
