Tech Talk Event: Gen AI

Join us, the Ulster University Computing Society and Ulster University School of Computing for an enlightening evening dedicated to the theme, "Gen AI". Dive deep into the world of Artificial Intelligence and its transformative impact on the next generation of tech innovations.

GitHub Copilot - the Future of Software Engineering?

Catherine McMurrough - Lead Software Engineer at Kainos

Generative AI has been one of the most talked about and transformative areas within the development (and wider) communities in recent times. Many tools have been released harnessing the power of Gen-AI. Adopting some of these tools and evolving engineering processes to include Gen-AI has the potential not only to speed up delivery, but also to improve the engineering experience. In this talk, Catherine will look specifically at GitHub Copilot and the impact using this tool has had on engineers over a trial period.

For the repo was Dark and Full of Terrors - or Refactoring existing codebases with Generative AI

Stephen Howell - Academic Developer Advocate at AWS

As developers, we now have access to incredibly powerful generative AI tools like Amazon CodeWhisperer that can help accelerate and enhance our coding. However, it's important that we as professionals use these tools thoughtfully. In this talk, I'll cover strategies for leveraging generative AI to boost productivity while still prioritizing coding best practices and fundamentals. I'll discuss different approaches for popular languages and stacks, and how to get maximum benefit from CodeWhisperer.

Together, humans and AI can collaborate to write more secure, scalable and maintainable code. Attendees will leave with actionable tips for making the most of generative AI while staying focused on producing high-quality, production-ready software.

GenAI - Applications within Finance

Simon Smyth PM/BA - (Senior Leadership Team) Regulatory Solutions Practice at First Derivative

In this talk I'll be giving a brief overview of GenAI and explore some of the challenges in bringing GenAI to industry. I'll talk about my time working in the City of London during the GFC (Global Financial Crisis), the work that was required back then and how GenAI could have made life a whole lot easier! We'll look at whether GenAI is a technical fad or a revolution and look at some real world applications within industry, with a focus on Investment Banking. Regulation for GenAI will be introduced to the audience as an area that will see massive focus in the coming months and years.
