About this event

'HACK FOR THE PLANET' HACKATHON

Background:

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. These goals aim to promote sustainable development in all countries, by addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.

SDGs 6, 12, 13, 14, and 15 are specifically related to the planet, and they focus on issues such as ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, promoting sustainable consumption and production, combating climate change, and protecting biodiversity and ecosystems.

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation - The goal is to ensure universal access to safe and affordable drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene services for all by 2030. This is important because access to clean water and sanitation is essential for human health and well-being, and also has implications for economic development and environmental sustainability.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production - The goal is to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns, by improving resource efficiency, reducing waste and pollution, and encouraging sustainable lifestyles. This is important because unsustainable consumption and production patterns contribute to environmental degradation, climate change, and social inequalities.

SDG 13: Climate Action - The goal is to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building resilience to climate-related hazards. This is important because climate change poses a major threat to the planet's ecosystems, economies, and societies.

SDG 14: Life Below Water - The goal is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. This is important because the oceans and their ecosystems play a critical role in regulating the planet's climate, and provide livelihoods and food security for millions of people.

SDG 15: Life on Land - The goal is to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and biodiversity. This is important because healthy ecosystems are essential for human well-being, and provide a range of ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, soil fertility, and water regulation.

The urgency to address these SDGs is clear, as the planet faces increasing environmental and social challenges. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are all threatening the planet's ecosystems, and human health and well-being. Innovative solutions are needed to address these challenges, including new technologies, policy interventions, and behavioral changes. Governments, businesses, and individuals all have a role to play in promoting sustainable development, and addressing the urgent challenges facing the planet.
