Everything from the internet down to IoT devices such as cars and washing machines incorporates open-source software in some way. Open-source software is one of the unique developments of the software community and is hard to come by in other fields.
You might look at a popular open-source project on GitHub and be daunted by the scale of the project and the number of contributors which can turn a lot of folks away from attempting to contribute to open-source projects! I am a computer scientist with a strong foundation in computer vision and artificial intelligence, currently working as a Research Associate at Texas A&M University (Soil and Crop Sciences department). I'm also a Google developer expert in ML. For the past five years, my research has focused on developing open-source software solutions that allow farmers and researchers to extract physiological information from their crops. Working on this time, I became aware of the importance of high-throughput phenotyping and the lack of robust software tools for analysis. This epiphany created a desire within me to apply computer vision techniques to the field of agriculture.
