About this event

What’s this all about?

During this program, you will learn the basics of Android Development using Kotlin! We will be working through guided pathways as part of an exciting new course developed by Android Experts from Google. By the end of this Study Jam series, you will be able to create your first Android app and be prepared to rock this year’s Google Solution Challenge! (Check out last year’s event)

Why should I learn this stuff?

Well, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that today, Android is everywhere. There are currently more than 2.7 billion active phones, tablets, TVs, media streamers, and more that are powered by Android with an ever-increasing demand for skilled developers. Plus, having an app that you made being used by everyone, is pretty darn cool.

What’s the big deal with Kotlin?

Basically, Kotlin is dope. It’s an opensource, cross-platform, general-purpose programming language developed by JetBrains and is completely interoperable with Java. With Kotlin, you don’t have to worry writing tons of boilerplate code and those pesky null pointer exceptions. What’s more, Google recently announced Kotlin as the primary supported language for Android development, so it’s pretty much a no-brainer.

Alright, what else do I need to know?

There are two different tracks offered under the Jams, based on whether someone has prior programming experience or not. The participants are free to select their preferred tracks.

• For the New to Programming Track, the prerequisites are basic computer skills and basic math skills.

• For the Prior Programming Experience Track, the prerequisites are prior programming experience in an object-oriented programming language, being familiar with how to use an IDE, and being familiar with using GitHub.

What’s going to happen during the Jams?

During the Study Jam sessions, Kotlin Experts will walk the participants through the concepts required to complete the codelabs as part of the tracks. The sessions will be interactive, so feel free to drop your queries. We will be working through the New to Programming Track during the first few Jams, where Kotlin and Android basics will be covered. Participants with prior programming experience are welcome to work through the beginner track as well as the Kotlin Koans exercises as part of the Prior Programming Track during that time. After completion of New to Programming Jams, we will jump straight into the Prior Programming Experience Track. We will be sending more info about the courses.

What’s in it for me though?

Aside from learning to create awesome applications for one of the world’s most widely used operating systems, chatting up with industry experts and standing a chance to have your projects featured by Google?

Yes, we have certificates too.

Once you get all the badges offered under Prior Programming Experience Track, we’ll be sending your digital certificates and corresponding bragging rights.
